Improving veterans’ access to healthcare services

We’re extremely proud to share that our Operations Manager, Jon Lynn, has been actively working with the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), NHS England and the Office for Veterans’ Affairs to promote “Op COURAGE”—a specialist mental health and wellbeing service developed by veterans, for veterans.

Jon openly talks about the struggles he faced after leaving the military and how one doctor was able to help him turn his life around, just by understanding that he needed more help to transition back to civilian life and that specialist services for veterans were available through the NHS. He’s a firm believer that many other veterans and their families can be helped, just through raising awareness of the Op COURAGE service and the range of support and treatment it offers.

Jon recently explained in an interview with LBC the need for Op COURAGE, why it’s important that veterans who are referred to the service can speak to other veterans who have been through the same challenges, and how people can get the help they need through the service.

Watch a short clip of that interview below.

He’s also promoted the service on other news outlets, including BBC Breakfast, and was recently featured in a Wirral Globe article about the service.

How GPs can get involved

Any GP practice can become “Veteran Friendly Accredited”. The Veteran Friendly Accreditation scheme by the Royal College of GPs and NHS England is a quick-to-implement, free support programme for GP practices in England that will enable you and your practice team to easily identify, understand and support veterans and, where appropriate, refer them to specialist healthcare services designed especially for them.

How veterans can receive support through Op COURAGE

For many veterans and reservists, the first step is through a conversation with a GP and letting them know that you’ve served in the military. Your doctor can refer you to Op COURAGE’s mental health and wellbeing support services from there.

You can also contact the service directly—either yourself or through a family member or a friend. It’s a regional service, so you’ll need to contact your local area’s Op COURAGE service for the best support. A list of the regional support centres and their contact details are provided at https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/armed-forces-community/mental-health/veterans-reservists/.

Here’s an outline of the support and treatment that Op COURAGE offers:

  • help to transition from military to civilian life by providing mental health care with Defence Medical Services (DMS)
  • help in recognising and treating early signs of mental health problems, as well as more advanced mental health conditions and psychological trauma
  • support and treatment for substance misuse and addictions
  • access to other NHS mental health services, such as finding an NHS talking therapies service and eating disorder services
  • additional support through charities and local organisations with wider health and wellbeing needs, such as help with housing, relationships, finances and employment
  • support for armed forces families affected by mental health problems, including helping them to access local services
