Amongst the most uplifting stories to emerge from hospitals at this time has been the innovative use of tablets to allow isolated patients to connect with loved ones and receive ‘Virtual Visits’.
Many Trusts have received tablets donated from the public, and whilst this has really helped to roll out Virtual Visits at scale, it can still present significant challenges. Each device needs to be cleaned after use and they can quite easily go astray.
We were approached by several Trusts including West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and Swansea Bay Health Board to re-purpose a solution originally developed for maternity wards, whereby the tablet is securely held in an enclosure and moved from bed to bed on a lightweight mobile stand.
Whilst the solution is simple it is certainly effective. The need to handle the device is greatly reduced as it is free-standing, the tablets are secure, and the whole unit is easy to wipe clean using standard hospital cleaning wipes.
